In 1912, Harrie T. Lindeberg (1879-1959) wrote "Build Simply, Whether a Collage or a Castle" (1). This credo of simplicity was one Lindeberg adhered to for the next forty years in his domestic architectural design. His career spanned from the Progressive Era of Teddy Roosevelt to the beginning of Modernism at the end of World War II. Lindeberg, well-known as a gentleman architect, was more an innovative traditionalist compared to his contemporaries Frank Lloyd Wright, William Adams Delano and George Howe.
Harrie T. Lindeberg's home base was in New York, though he designed homes throughout the United States. Between 1906-1914, Lindeberg and his partner Lewis Albro successfully built a new type of country home which was both pastoral and sophisticated. As the railroad moved into suburban areas, Lindeberg and Albro built many alluring country homes. By the mid-1920's, Lindeberg's clients were found in metropolitan New York, as well as throughout the United States. In the mid-1930's, with the shift toward Modernism, Lindeberg's sleek cellular architectural designs won little acclaim among his peers.
Harrie Lindeberg lived quietly on his Long Island estate with his third wife Angeline Krech James during World War II (2). His peer, Matlack Price, prophetically wrote in 1925, "Future architectural historians may say that Mr. Lindeberg's work was very largely instrumental in bringing about the change in our ideals in country houses... [He] showed that a house is at its best when it looks as though it were meant to live in, and that it can possess charm as well as a true architectural manner." (3)
