Interlibrary Loan: Overview

What Is Interlibrary Loan?

Interlibrary loan serves to expand the range of publications available to the LIU Post community. Administrators, faculty, staff, and students may request that publications not owned by any LIU campus library be borrowed from other libraries.

How do I request publications through interlibrary loan?

Interlibrary loan service for articles has been restored. Please send your requests for articles to post-interlibraryloan@liu.edu. We won't be able to fill interlibrary loan requests for physical items. Thank you for your understanding during this COVID-19 crisis.

How will I receive the articles once they arrive?

Articles you requested will be delivered to you electronically as email attachments.

Time Factors
The time needed to fill interlibrary loan requests varies greatly, and it is often difficult to predict how much time will be needed. Please allow at least one week for the delivery of articles.

Costs
In most instances, the B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library is able to absorb the costs associated with obtaining books and articles on interlibrary loan. When the costs are unusually high, the staff of Interlibrary Loan will ask you whether or not you would be willing to pay the costs, or whether the request should be cancelled.

Limitations
It is often difficult and in some cases impossible to borrow certain kinds of library materials on interlibrary loan, since most libraries either do not own or do not lend such items. Items generally not obtainable on interlibrary loan include: rare books, manuscripts, reference books, books about genealogy, standardized tests and measures, audiovisual materials, entire issues of periodicals, scholarly books published during the current year or in some cases the previous year, theses, dissertations, and new textbooks. If you are in need of such items, please speak with the interlibrary loan staff before requesting them.

Important Copyright Information

WARNING CONCERNING COPYRIGHT RESTRICTIONS

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research". If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use", that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
