Online Teaching Resources Library Guide: LIU Policy, Competencies and Requirements

This guide will assist faculty teaching web-facilitated, blended, or online courses at Long Island University.

Teaching Competencies

Blended and online teaching competencies include:

  • Self-assess readiness to teach in an online environment
  • Identify the needed components of a blended/online syllabus
  • Distinguish between asynchronous and synchronous communication tools in Blackboard and apply them to a blended or online course
  • Generate a rubric for a class assignment
  • Design online activities for accessibility within Blackboard
  • Develop a course plan which includes assessment

Teaching Requirements

Blended and online teaching requirements include:

  • Basics Course offered by LIU or equivalent
  • Blackboard workshop
  • Meeting with an instructional designer (minimum of two meetings, ideally 3-5)
  • Syllabus development and submission for review
