LIU offers online faculty development courses and workshops through Academic Affairs via Blackboard and the Online Learning Consortium (formerly Sloan-C) College Pass Program. Information Technology offers face-to-face faculty workshops on using Blackboard at the ITRCs at LIU Brooklyn and at LIU Post.

LIU Courses
LIU is pleased to offer a variety of online faculty development courses about teaching in blended and online formats. These courses are available to all full-time and part-time faculty at LIU.
Blended and Online Course Basics (Fully Online)
This two-week introductory course is aimed at faculty who are interested in learning the basics of teaching in a blended or online environment. Faculty who want to demonstrate competency in teaching a blended or online course at LIU will need to earn a certificate of completion at the end of this course. This course is delivered through our Blackboard Learning Management System. Course topics include: Introduction and readiness, syllabus, tools, assessment, and course content. Learning is conducted in an asynchronous format while offering participants one optional synchronous Adobe Connect session. While individual results may vary, the course represents approximately 12 - 15 hours per week of readings, watching videos and posting to discussion forums. Available courses will be posted to our Academic Affairs registration page, and announcements will be sent out to the university community.
Introduction to Discussion Forums
This one-week introductory course is offered to faculty who are interested in promoting engaging discussions in a web-facilitated, blended, or online course. This course is delivered through our Blackboard Learning Management System. Course topics include: Introduction and planning, strategies, and assessment. Learning is conducted in an asynchronous format. While individual results may vary, the course represents approximately 12 - 15 hours per week of readings, watching videos and posting to discussion forums. Available courses will be posted to our Academic Affairs registration page, and announcements will be sent out to the university community.
Utilizing Technology to Facilitate Group Work
This two-week course introduces faculty to methods of structuring, troubleshooting and assessing group work. Group work is often utilized by instructors to help students learn from each other and engage with course content in new and unique ways. Participants will learn about and use group work tools available in Blackboard as they develop a group work activity for their course. While individual results may vary, the course represents approximately 12 - 15 hours per week of readings, watching videos and posting to discussion forums. Available courses will be posted to our Academic Affairs registration page, and announcements will be sent out to the university community.
Web-facilitator's Starter Kit
This self-paced online course is designed to provide you with everything you need to begin to incorporate the use of Blackboard into your face-to-face courses. We'll provide you with an introduction to learning management systems, such as Blackboard, and instructional design best practices and tips for successful web-facilitation. This course is appropriate for Blackboard beginners as well as those who are looking to maximize their instructionally effective use of Blackboard in their face-to-face courses. While individual results may vary, the course represents approximately 15 hours of self-paced reading assignments. Available courses will be posted to our Academic Affairs registration page, and announcements will be sent out to the university community. This course will be piloted in fall of 2012.
