Journal Metrics
Many of the traditional bibliometric measures cover usage and impact at the journal level.
- Journal Citation Reports Provides transparent, publisher-neutral data and statistics. Contains citation metrics, including the Journal Impact Factor™ (JIF), alongside descriptive data about a journal’s open access content and contributing authors.
- Eigenfactor Score The Eigenfactor Score calculation is based on the number of times articles from the journal published in the past five years have been cited in the JCR year, but it also considers which journals have contributed these citations so that highly cited journals will influence the network more than lesser cited journals. References from one article in a journal to another article from the same journal are removed, so that Eigenfactor Scores are not influenced by journal self-citation. Eigenfactor metrics are available in Journal Citation Reports or Eigenfactor.org.
- Article Influence Score Another Eigenfactor metric, the Article Influence Score determines the average influence of a journal's articles over the first five years after publication. It is calculated by multiplying the Eigenfactor Score by 0.01 and dividing by the number of articles in the journal, normalized as a fraction of all articles in all publications. This measure is roughly analogous to the 5-Year Journal Impact Factor in that it is a ratio of a journal’s citation influence to the size of the journal’s article contribution over a period of five years. - Citescore CiteScore uses a 3-year window and is based on the average citations received per document. CiteScore is the number of citations received by a journal in one year to documents published in the three previous years, divided by the number of documents indexed in Scopus published in those same three years. For example, the 2016 CiteScore counts the citations received in 2016 to documents published in 2013, 2014 or 2015, and divides this by the number of documents indexed in Scopus published in 2013, 2014 and 2015. - SCImago Journal Ranking (SJR) SJR expresses the average number of weighted citations received in the selected year by the documents published in the selected journal in the three previous years, --i.e. weighted citations received in year X to documents published in the journal in years X-1, X-2 and X-3. Available in Scopus or www.scimagojr.com.
- Source Normalized Impact per Paper (SNIP) SNIP is based on SJR but allows for easier comparison between disciplines. SNIP measures a source’s contextual citation impact by weighting citations based on the total number of citations in a subject field. Available in Scopus.
- h5 index and h5 median Both the h5 index and h5 median are Google Scholar journal measures based on the past five years. Available in Google Scholar Metrics.
