What is Peer Review?

Peer-reviewed (or scholarly, or refereed) journal articles are written by experts in a particular field and reviewed by other subject experts in that same field.

These articles are often seen as the primary components of academic research.

The process of Peer Review is rigorous and involves several layers of analysis of an authors work. Peer-reviewers are charged with maintaining quality control over the published research and they provide a journal editor with input on whether an article should be published in a particular journal. Peer reviewers scrutinize articles or studies to be certain that they meet certain scientific standards including that it builds on the published work in that field, has a consistent and well-defined methodology, and that it comes to a logical conclusion.

Using peer-reviewed material is one important way to make certain that the information you are relying on is credible.
