Technical Services: FAQ

FAQ

Can the Library order a book or resource for my class?

The Library will purchase materials to support coursework when requested as budgets allow. The Library does not, as a rule, purchase textbooks, workbooks, or lab books for general use, as these are expenditures expected of students. Financial constraints curtail textbook purchase; titles are selected to augment the educational process. Exceptions may be made if it is determined that a textbook provides background information of a reference nature. Requests may be made by filling out the Acquisitions Request Form.

How do I suggest a title for the collection?

If you wish to request a specific title for the collection, please fill out the Acquisitions Request Form. You may also phone or mail a request. Please provide the following information: author, title, publisher, year, edition, ISBN, and price. And please let us know whether you are a faculty member, staff member or student, your department, and the phone number where you wish to be reached.

If you want to make a more general suggestion, for instance more books on personnel management, please let us know as well.

How do I report a mistake/error in the online catalog?

Please fill out this form to report an error, mistake, or other issue with LIUCat

Does the Library accept donations?

The B. Davis Schwartz Memorial Library accepts donations of books and other materials that support the research and teaching mission of the University. Especially welcome are items that will have significant importance to the library’s collections based on their subject matter or rarity. Due to the high cost of processing donations, the Library reserves the right to decline gift offers at its sole discretion.

Donated materials will be evaluated in accordance with criteria consistent with the Collection Development Policy. Upon receipt, materials become the property of the Library and will be reviewed by appropriate library personnel. We do not provide appraisals, but a letter of acknowledgement for the gift will be sent to the donor when requested. For more information, please contact Acquisitions personnel at 516-299-2835 or email Post-AcquDept@liu.edu.
