Developmental psychology addresses how people develop, change (or stay the same), and adapt (maintain or regulate loss) across the lifespan in areas such as physical, cognitive, social, intellectual, perceptual, personality, and emotional growth. The primary goal for researchers in developmental psychology is to conduct research designed to help people reach their full potential. For those working in applied settings, the goal is to assess, evaluate and treat those with developmental disabilities or disorders or who have experienced nonnormative life events negatively affecting their development.
