Why are Citations Important?

Citations are important for:

Credibility--They lend support to your ideas and arguments.  They give you greater credibility.

Context--They show how your work is related to other work. They place your work in the context of the field of study.

Influence--They help acknowledge that others have influenced your work and give credit to them.

Evaluation--They also allow others to evaluate the sources that you used.

Locating sources--They also allow others (and you) to locate the sources that you used.  If your reading somebody else’s work citations provide you with additional sources of information.

Avoidance of plagiarism--And of course using citations helps you avoid accusations of plagiarism.
